Fabric Craft Ideas- Spring Clothes!
With a new season coming, it's natural to want to add something new to freshen up your wardrobe. Here are some ideas I'm excited to try, for adults and kids!
From Craft magazine comes this simple yet chic wrap skirt. What I love about it is that they offer two versions- a simple version for beginners, and a more advanced version with piping for people who are comfortable behind a sewing machine. Oh, and this skirt is reversible. Which is great if you're like me, and have a hard time picking just one fabric to use! Plus I love wrap skirts. They're easy to make, and pretty much a one size fits all.
From Joy's Hope comes this adorable Tutu T-Shirt. What a great idea! This seriously makes me wish I had a little girl- I just might have to make it for a friend's kid anyway. She provides detailed instructions, and promises that it's a lot easier than it looks. She made her first tutu t-shirt when she was just a beginner at sewing, so don't be afraid to try this!
If you are looking for
ways to save old clothes, here are some useful tips. Amy at Glitter, Vinyl, and Thread has this tutorial for fixing t-shirt sleeves by shortening them. Craft gives directions on how to c
rochet that hole in your favorite sweater, as well as how to make your jean pant/skirt patches more stylish.

Etsy Inspiration - Birds Birds Birds!
I love all birds, especially owls. I mean, I really love owls. I hot owl potholders, owl figurines, owl candles, owl bowls...there is something just especially adorable about them.
So I'm alw
ays on the look out for beautiful bird inspired creations. Here are some of my favorites I've seen on Etsy lately.
I like how this bag is sturdy but still looks chic and elegant. Plus I love the fact that they use a pearl vintage button, and the bird applique is great. And that little flap? It's magnetic! How cool is that? This makes me wish I was better at sewing heavy materials.
This little bird dishes are just too adorable! I love how the imprinted lace pattern forms their eyes, and I like the vintage light blue. I would love to use these as a key plate, soap dish, or just as decoration. This artist has a lot of beautiful items on Etsy...totally worth checking out.
First of all, I just love this fabric print. Could see this being great for pillows, curtains, you name it. But I love the use of these flying geese on a passport holder! What a clever idea. Now if only I had time to go traveling the world...
Okay, now it's
time for an owl. I'm not a much of a jewelry person myself, but this resin pendant is cute enough to win me over. If you like this style but not owls, the same artist makes many different adorable vintage pendants in the same style.

While walking around the neighborhood last weekend with my boys I passed this lady selling flowers in front of a church letting out. The colors of the flowers were too bright for me to resist snapping a shot. Yay for Spring coming soon!

Homemade Stuffed Animals
As a kid, one of my favorite stuffed animals was made by my Mom. I liked the fact that it didn't quite look like any of the toy animals my friends had. Vintage stuffed animals are not impossible to find, but it can be fun to make your own. Here are some ideas for projects:
From Martha Steward Living is this idea to turn old wool sweaters into adorable little farm animals. I like the way the more classic wool prints look with these, but I'm sure more modern prints would work great too. So if you're cleaning out your winter closets, her
e's a good way to make sure that old sweater your tired of doesn't go to waste. There are directions for a chicken, lamb, and a pig-- I especially like how the pig looks.
If creating something 3D is a bit daunting to you, this sewn felt penguin is more like a small shaped pillow, and easy enough that older kids could do it as a craft. According to the people over at Craft Daisies, this took them only 3 hours while watching TV. So if you are looking for something simple but still cute, this is it.
Then there is the venerable sock monkey. Crazy toe socks are great for these, or wool socks make for a more classic monkey. And once you've got the basic idea down, there is no limit for what other animals you can create. I've seen some really adorable sock octopuses being sold on blogs lately, that I am thinking about trying to do myself.
Hope these are fun!

Iditarod Weekend!
The Iditarod starts this Saturday, so if you are thinking of things to do with your kids, consider doing some activities around this theme. Can you tell I used to be a teacher? It's easy to get kids interested in the Iditarod, and is a great chance to teach them about an interesting part of Alaska's wilderness and culture.
So here's some information to share with your kids:
The Iditarod Trail began as a mail and supply route. Mail and supplies went in. Gold came out. All via dog sled. In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life saving highway for the epidemic-stricken city of Nome. Diphtheria threatened and serum had to be brought in; again by intrepid dog mushers and their faithful hard-driving dogs.
The Iditarod is a commemoration of Alaska's past. The race is over 1150 miles long, which the racers cover in 10 to 17 days.
The trip is long and grueling. The climate of Alaska is unlike what most of us experience. In some areas of the state, temperatures can hit extremes of 60 degrees below zero. The northernmost part of the state also has long periods of night and day. The town of Barrow has nearly three months of continuous sunlight beginning in May. However, when the sun sets in November, Barrow receives no sunlight for more than two months.
Activities:
And if your kids like word searches, here is an Iditarod word search and an Iditarod crossword puzzle.

Feeding Your Kids
Growing up, my parents fed me pretty healthy food overall. Fruits and vegetables were a part of my daily diet, and I was rarely allowed to get sugar laden cereal, much to my annoyance. But my parents were also by no means strict. There were always cookies in the house, and other slightly junky snacks like chips, cheese-its, etc. While I definitely would not have opposed more boxes of Frosted Flakes around the house, I never felt deprived of the sorts of foods kids like.
With my own kids, I've tried to walk the same line. I watch what they eat, but I try to make a big deal about it. I figure they need lots of energy, and so as long as they are getting some healthy food in there, it's okay if their is some less than healthy stuff in the mix.
In an article published recently in The New York Times, suggests that you can be too overbearing when it comes to encouraging your kids to eat healthy. The overall message is that more than telling kids specific rules like "don't eat candy" it is better to simply encouraging good eating habits by leading by example, and introducing them to as much healthy food as possible.
This is a tricky issue every parent struggles with, and I'd be curious to hear your opinions. How do you try and get your kids to eat well without denying them the joy of childhood and without making them overly worried about food?

Fabric Bag Craft
These days you have an excuse to perhaps one (or two) too many bags- bags are not only a fashion statement these days, they are also a symbol of a green lifestyle. Fabric bags are reusable, so they cut down on using plastic bags. So feel free to indulge without on guilt, get some fabric, and pick from one of these style of bags and get started!
The Sturdy Tot
e Bag
A basic and practical bag can still be chic and pretty! This sturdy tote bag pattern from Jcaroline Creative will allow you step by step instructions to make a bag that you can use for grocery shopping, trips to beach, or the library. Use upholstery fabric to make a bag that will really last. What I like about this design is that it also includes a smaller pocket, perfect for a wallet, pens, or change.
Pleated Fabric Purse
This fashionable purse d
oes not require a lot of fabric, and does not have a lot of lengeth, but because it is so wide it still holds a bit of stuff. Brought to us by Craftster, there are detailed directions that make this any easy craft to complete. The purse does not need a zipper, lets you mix and match different fabrics, and is nice and sturdy with lining.
Fabric Car Trash Bag
Okay, so this last one is not a bag to carry around, but when I found this craft I could not resist posting it. While it gets the job done, hanging a plastic bag off your car seat leaves something for the eyes to desire. Allyson Hill provides detailed directions on how to make one of these. The fabric featured is the retro rocket fabric. If you don't want to use a trash bag as the liner, you could also pick out an oilcloth to add some extra color.
